Composition

Matteo Franceschini

He creates works for theater, symphonic, choral and chamber compositions, soundtracks, performances and multimedia installations. His music shows a strong inclination for theatricality and narrative dynamics in a meeting of languages of different matrix substantiated by constant research on timbre. He collaborates with soloists, choreographers, directors, and multidisciplinary artists and receives commissions from institutions such as the Filarmonica della Scala, the Biennale di Venezia, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Philharmonie de Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Ircam-Centre Pompidou, Grand Théâtre de Provence, Opera Grand Avignon, Milano Musica Festival, and Haydn Foundation of Bolzano and Trento. A Silver Lion for Music 2019 at La Biennale di Venezia and SACD's "Prix nouveau talent musique" 2024, he received the "Fedora - Rolf Liebermann Prize for Opera" in 2014 and the title of "Italian Affiliated Fellow in the Arts" by the American Academy in Rome in 2011. After being appointed associate artist at the Orchestre national d'Île-de-France, the Accademia Filarmonica Romana and the Haydn Foundation, he will be composer-in-residence at the Opéra Grand Avignon for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 Seasons. A professor of composition at the Conservatorio A. Steffani in Castelfranco Veneto, he is regularly invited to give masterclasses and on the juries of prestigious international competitions. The icastic yet dreamlike quality of his musical imagery points to synthesis of writing but also entails a revival of the figure of the author/performer (under the stage name of TOVEL) in relation to the writing itself: this is with the intention of developing new aspects in the sphere of performance, in order to identify the true creative act in a unique and organic interweaving of compositional and performing moment. Since 2011 it has been published by Casa Ricordi - Universal Music Publishing.
